  1. Hi, As a woman who fell in love with a priest and wrote a book about it, I am glad that Alberto Cutie left the priesthood and got married. Celibacy in the Church has always been cruel and unnecessary. Eugenia Renskoff

Who are you to say it is cruel and unnecessary? Even St Francis said to one of his monks that marriage is just as important a Sacrament as Holy Orders. This one monk yearned for his girlfriend and St Francis took this as a sign of Gods will for this monk and allowed him to leave and get married. Why couldn’t Alberto do the same thing; why did he have to blame the Church? The reason was that he had a guilty conscience and found the people who would support him in his sin. We can’t always do whatever we want just because we want to. I see no courage in this man, but I do see courage in those who will uphold their vows!

Perhaps you should read Father Alberto’s book, he understood his commitment to the Church and he tried to be obedient but he also entered the Church at a very young age. I know that my ideas of life are completely different now at 25 then they were at 18. I do not think he committed a sin, did he break his commitment to the Church… yes… Sin… NO! It clearly states in the bible that man should not be alone that is where Eve comes into the picture. I think the Roman Catholic Church has too many “Man-made Laws” these are not the law of God. Therefore how has he committed a sin? Father Alberto did not molest a child and he did not commit a crime he simply fell in love, in Corinthians is says… “The greatest of these is love”. This book is not about justifying his action it is simply explaining them, how he tried to stay away from his humanly feelings and stay true to his commitment. He blames the Church for turning a blind eye to truly bad things like priests molesting young boys or having relations with men (which is also clearly outlined in the bible… God does not approve of homosexuality! However, the Catholic Church never did anything but relocate these priests and then acted as if nothing happened. We are all human and all have sinned, so why does the Church get to place judgment? He will have his judgment day before God. I think Father Alberto is an honorable man who made a mistake and should have informed the Church before getting caught, but like I stated above NONE OF US ARE PERFECT. Robert how would you feel if you wore your sins on the outside for everyone to see… would you be as judgmental as you are now? I doubt it!

  2. Hi, Robert, The Church is the one having the ridiculous Celibacy Rule. I understand that it was meant (at least at first) to discourage priests leaving their money, property to their family and not the Church. It is cruel and unnecessary because men will be men and women will be women. Even if they are priests, monks or nuns, they can still fall in love and if it is Forbidden Love, it hurts very much. Some people feel guilty, some have to hide their feelings for fear of scandal. I know all this well. Personal experience goes a long way. Eugenia Renskoff

The problem is that some priests within the Catholic Church are allowed to get married… and many years before all Priests were allowed to be married… the celibacy rule is a newer addition to the Church’s rules and as Father Alberto said “it works for some some of the time and doesn’t work for most most of the time.” I think the priest should be allowed to choose if they want to be celibate to help them progress in God’s work.. but it should not be a requirement.
