Salt Intake a “Shaky” Matter

New research from the University of California indicates that cutting back on salt in teenagers’ diets by as little as one-half teaspoon, or three grams, a day, could reduce the number of young adults with high blood pressure by 44 to 63 percent.

“The U.S. diet is already high in salt, and adolescents consume more salt — more than 9 grams (3,800 milligrams of sodium) — than any other age group,” said Kirsten Bibbins-Domingo, PhD, MD, UCSF associate professor of medicine and epidemiology during the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2010 meeting in Chicago Nov. 14th.

According to the American Heart Association, about 74.5 million people in the United States age 20 and older have high blood.  This “silent killer” has no symptoms and sufferers may not even be aware that the their heart and other organs are being damaged.  Left untreated, high blood pressure can lead to vision loss, kidney damage, stroke and even heart failure.

The statistics are pretty startling and could probably scare you away from salt shakers forever.  And what then?  A life banished to blandness?  Absolutely not!  Reducing your intake or simply modifying the type of salt you use can make a huge impact to your health without loosing any of the flavor.
